The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has defined Web Mapping Service (WMS) specification protocols for the transfer of geospatial data from servers to client applications. A Web Map Service (WMS) produces an image (e.g. GIF, JPG) of geospatial data. WMS gives clients access to an image of data without storing a local copy of the dataset A Web Map Service (WMS) is a standard protocol developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium in 1999 for serving georeferenced map images over the Internet. These images are typically produced by a map server from data provided by a GIS database WMS and REST Services. Geospatial Wetlands Data and other layers on the Wetlands Mapper can can be accessed by web-based applications by using the following Open GIS Consortium compliant web mapping services Working with WMS Data¶ Often you need reference data layers for your basemap or to display your results in the context of other datasets. Many organizations publish datasets online that can be readily used in GIS. A popular standard for publishing maps online is called WMS (Web Map Service). This is a better choice for using reference layers. You can learn more about WMS services at the Open Geospatial Consortium Web site. This GIS data is overlaid with drainage basin boundaries to compute area-weighted composite model parameters for each sub-basin

Full metadata for each of the sets of imagery in the web map service is available in NJGIN Explorer on the New Jersey Geographic Information Network web site at https://njgin.state.nj.us. Search for Live Data and Maps, Imagery & Base Maps, and use the year as a Title keyword Many web map services support multiple image formats. If the WMS server supports PNG format, ArcMap will, by default, request images in PNG. PNG is a general purpose format that will not reduce image quality; that is why it is the default. PNG returns a high-quality image that supports transparency Each of the topics below presents an overview of different client-side WMS requests. For more information on WMS in general, see the Web Map Service (WMS) Implementation Specification. Many commercial and open source GIS and mapping software have client-side support for WMS
